What is an Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
Libraries cooperate to advance scholarship by lending library materials to each other. The Ron E. Lewis Library offers this service to supplement the library's collection. As such, it is not intended to be used as a substitute for materials already in the collection.
What if an item I need is checked out?
If an item in our catalog is currently checked out, consider "placing a hold" on the item, which allows us to notify you when it is returned. "Placing a hold" can be done while viewing the item in our library catalog. Click "Place Hold" and use your student ID "R" number and your birthdate (mmddyy) to access the request form. Ask for help if this fails to work.
How do I request an ILL?
Fill out an interlibrary loan form. Fill out the form as completely as you can to avoid any delays in our processing your request. We will find out if the item is available in another library and request it. Print a copy of the request for your records.
How long does it usually take?
It can take two to three weeks to receive a printed book. A copied article may take less time and a book coming from Lamar University may take less time. Since we depend upon other libraries to supply these items, there are no guarantees that an ILL request will be filled. Therefore every effort should be made to use our library's resources first before requesting from another library. Always ask for help if you cannot find something for an assignment, if time is limited, and begin your research EARLY enough to allow for ILL requests.
